Mission and Vision

The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature provides senior citizens an opportunity to become directly involved in the legislative process. Here a forum for older citizens has been established to debate issues and establish priorities based on the result of these discussions.

The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature strives to promote good government for all Texans by directly involving Senior citizens in the legislative process. TSHL provides a nonpartisan forum for discussion and debate of Senior issues, advocacy training and an avenue through which older citizens may serve as a resource to both public and private sectors.

Our vision is that the applied wisdom, energy, and experience of aging will improve the lives of Texans through education, knowledge, and involvement in legislation and governmental affairs.

Strategic Plan: The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature Strategic Plan provides a guide to the future of the Association. The plan is based upon the Legislative authorization from the 69th Texas Legislature and the Association vision statement.

Description

The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature strives to promote good government for all Texans by directly involving Senior citizens in the legislative process. TSHL provides a nonpartisan forum for discussion and debate of Senior issues, advocacy training and an avenue through which older citizens may serve as a resource to both public and private sectors.

Advocacy training is provided, enabling delegates to offer informed assistance on such policy matters. Our advocacy training also gives support to older citizens and private sectors, boards, and commissions.

There are six main goals that the TSHL strives to achieve, centering around Senior welfare.
1. To motivate older citizens to realize that legislative involvement is a primary responsibility of effective citizenship.
2. To help older Texans know that if they are to become a viable political force, they must become informed and knowledgeable about the issues facing our community, state and nation.
3. To develop a forum for older persons to discuss and debate issues concerning not only their own welfare, but also that of others.
4. To educate the Silver-Haired Legislators in their advocacy role in order that they may continue their involvement in legislative matters in their local community.
5. To provide a model legislative body in which the Silver-Haired Legislators will have the opportunity to introduce, discuss, and pass resolutions dealing with major concerns of our state.
6. To work for the passage in the regular Texas Legislature of resolutions adopted by the TSHL, especially those that were prioritized.

The objective of these goals is to realize passage of TSHL priorities in the Texas Legislature.
