Serving children and young adults experiencing foster care since 2016
Day 1 Bags provides brand-new, high-quality luggage to children and young adults experiencing foster care so they don’t have to carry their belongings in trash bags. Through our year-round programs, we also provide thoughtfully selected essentials that support young people during removals, placement changes, reunifications, adoptions, graduations, and transitions into adulthood.
Our vision is simple: No child should carry their life in a trash bag.
#DignityNotTrash
More than 500 children enter foster care each day. Too many are removed from their homes without warning and forced to carry everything they own in a trash bag. That experience can send a painful message that their belongings, and even their lives, don’t matter.
A Day 1 Bag can’t erase the trauma of a move, but it can prevent one more indignity. Each bag is new, durable, and spacious enough to protect a child’s most important belongings.

OUR STORY
Day 1 Bags began in Boerne, Texas, in 2016 as an Eagle Scout project led by Hunter Beaton. His original goal was to provide backpacks to local children in foster care. That project grew into an award-winning national nonprofit that has distributed more than 285,000 high-quality bags to children and young adults in 47 states.
Today, Day 1 Bags works with nonprofit organizations, child welfare agencies, law enforcement departments, courts, schools, and community partners to provide luggage and essential items at no cost to the young people they serve.

FEATURED PROGRAMS
ADOPT A SENIOR FROM FOSTER CARE
Our annual Adopt a Senior campaign celebrates students experiencing foster care who are graduating from high school. Each sponsored senior receives high-quality luggage, essential supplies, gift cards, and meaningful items that recognize this major milestone.
A SERENITY ACTIVITY PACK
A Serenity Activity Pack, or ASAP Bag, equips participating law enforcement officers with age-appropriate comfort items for children encountered during emergencies, removals, or other traumatic situations. The program helps officers offer immediate reassurance and support during a child’s first moments of crisis.
DIGNITY, NOT TRASH
Dignity, Not Trash is our national awareness and advocacy campaign working to end the use of trash bags as luggage for children in foster care. The campaign provides state-level data, public education, advocacy tools, and ways for individuals, agencies, corporations, and lawmakers to take action.
