WRR was founded in 1977 in San Antonio, Texas. Since 2001 its primary base of operations has been located on 212 acres near Kendalia, Texas, a property which was purchased through the generosity of three of our supporters. Approximately 10,000 orphaned, injured, and displaced wildlife pass through our doors each year, most of whom are rehabilitated and released back into their native habitat. WRR also provides permanent individualized care in large natural enclosures or pastures to animals whom you would commonly find on farms and those who are unreleasable. Among the latter are indigenous wildlife, non-native animals victimized by the “pet” trade and roadside zoos, and retirees from research facilities. Additionally, WRR serves as a wildlife educational advocate in Texas and receives over 11,000 calls each year on our emergency wildlife hotline which is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Wildlife Rescue serves the cities of San Antonio and Austin, all of the surrounding counties, and much of the rest of the state.

Our staff of Animal Caretakers, Apprentices, and Volunteers care for the animals in our Rehabilitation Hospital & Nursery. Each animal is given exactly what he or she needs to get back to where they belong — which is the wild. We use species-specific formulas and diets, keep them warm and dry, and minimize hands-on contact.

Animals in rehabilitation can spend anywhere from a few days to several months at WRR before release. It all depends on the species, how old they were when they arrived, and the nature of their injuries. Releases take place on sites that have been inspected and approved by WRR animal care staff. Release sites are often large acreages and all are chosen to meet species-specific needs for vegetation and terrain and that have year-round water and food sources. All release sites are hunting-free zones.
